about

My sound journal / EP from a trip to Japan. It captures moments in the form of ambient dreamscapes & lofi hiphop, all centered around train station experiences.

I commissioned the pixel art based on the outfits we were wearing the most while in and around Japan, jmw327 did an amazing job and I highly recommend working with them. The album itself was made mostly of field recordings and instruments made from samples around Japan.

"Too Sleepy to Take the Train" comes from getting up at sunrise to take the train in Kyoto to Fushimi Inari-taisha (伏見稲荷大社). It was so early, I struggled to stay awake & had no idea how long it would take, waking up at each stop, Toba-kaidō Station (鳥羽街道駅) was 1st.

It was well worth it as we got there as vendors were setting up and no one else was really there, aside from a few seniors walking up the shrine. It was beautiful and several cats greeted us on the walk up. By the time we got back down it was packed, and I had a matcha latte.

"Sleepy Friends" was on the same trip as "Too Sleep" but actually at the correct stop now, observing one friend playing a joke on another friend trying to sleep- a timeless & universal joke. Hearing familiar sounds & not being able to place them or understand what is being said.

"Cute Train Station RPG Theme" is the end result of the inadvertent RPG-esque puzzle we ended up making for ourselves trying to get to Tama-Center Station (多摩センター駅) for Sanrio Puroland (サンリオピューロランド). Just like the song says, the whole station was super cute!

"Observing the Pursuit of Achievement" is about watching the salarymen slog home on the trains while I spent the day looking for video games. Self reflection on the ways my time is divided (40h, 5 days) and realizing that if you don't own your time people will take it from you.

Other songs didn't make the cut, but I originally envisioned this growing over time and places visited and experiences to share. I'm sure as I grow and learn, everything that was holding those songs back from completion will dissolve and they will be added to other volumes.
